LOGGING

Is this forest being sustainably managed?

The loggers have been working in Deongwar when it has been too wet to log on the coast. They have been taking the big timber and only leaving a few small habitat trees (30 to 40cm in diameter). These small trees will take 100 to 150 years to become functional habitat trees with large hollows.

The area currently being logged is one of the few areas that didn't get burnt during the 2019 bushfires. The 2019 bushfires were so intense they killed the canopy trees and the regrowth of green wattle has created dense thickets in some places.
