THE FOREST
-
129 ha public forest
-
already popular for its wonderful and scenic mountain bike tracks and walks
-
It is also the backdrop for kayaking and paddling on the Ewen Maddock Dam.
It currently contains:
-
entirely remnant vegetation
-
at least 190 different native plant species have been identified in this section of forest
-
vegetation which supports vulnerable and threatened species such as
-
koalas (this has been identified by Qld Gov as core koala habitat),
-
glossy black cockatoos,
-
greater gliders
-
regent honeyeaters
-
-
large and old habitat trees with hollows
-
a significant cultural site for the Kabi Kabi
-
an important wildlife corridor from Ewen Maddock Dam to Mooloolah River National Park
-
vegetation that is preventing soil erosion and therefore improving the water quality of the dam and surrounding waterways and rivers
In 1999 it was agreed that this forest would transition to a protected area due to its significant conservation values. This tenure transition is set to occur by 31 December 2024 when native timber logging in SEQ state forests would cease.
Refer to the Evidence tab for more information, including links to iNaturalist and Atlas of Living Australia which show the hundreds of species already observed in the forest.
